The Inn

Dedicated to ensuring that you have a good time…

The Little Crown Inn has been a meeting place for the Wainfelin and Pontnewynydd communities for as far back as the locals can remember! Back in the day, the pub was located on the site of the old drift mine, The Elled Level and was actually 2 separate buildings, three stories high (what is today our cellar, was the ground level first floor; it was filled in when the railway was demolished and the ground was built up to create the current industrial estate in front of the pub). The ground floor was occupied by businesses (only one 93 year old local can remember one of these being the wages office for the local forge when he was a young child!), whilst the upper floors were believed to be either accommodation or offices for the Elled Level.

Some years later the buildings became a Public House, however no one really remembers when… What started off as a small, traditional inn, serving nothing but good beer and pickled eggs, has grown into the thriving bar, restaurant and accommodation that it is today!

Despite the businesses success, we are dedicated to ensuring that the history and roots of The Little Crown Inn and its neighbourhood are not forgotten. Our “Mine Shaft” corridor acts as a stark reminder of the price that the people of Pontypool and the surrounding areas paid in the Industrial Revolution. The theme is continuing throughout the pub, with plenty of mining memorabilia and stories dotted about, a corner earmarked as a shrine to Pontypool’s rugby team and a ceiling covered in the newspaper headlines of the 1984 Miner’s Strike!

We love the atmosphere that traditional pub past times create and customers are welcome to a game of pool, darts or just have a game of cards around the table. Whilst we are making a conscious effort to uphold the customs of the pub, we appreciate that times are changing so offer all of our customers’ free Wi-Fi throughout, Sky Sports on multiple screens, a modern juke box and gaming machine. Our pub is family friendly, and children are welcome, when supervised, in the pub and beer garden until 9pm, with the exception of the bar area which is for over 16s only.

In an effort to make the most of the Welsh weather we have a large beer garden equipped with an outdoor stage and dancing area which is perfect for hosting our annual Charity Band Day! We also sport a children’s play area and there’s plenty of outdoor seating and customers are more than welcome to eat “Al Fresco” should they choose.

On the bar we have a mix of the old favourites including Carling Extra Cold, Strongbow, Brew XI, Guinness, and Worthington’s, a rotating Real Ale, and some of the more popular choices of today including our most recent addition, Stowford Press Cider! We also offer an extensive choice of soft beverages, wines and spirits!
